Points from separate qualifications add up. Some universities count only a capped number of them, and some make offers on named grades instead.

How UCAS Tariff points are added up

Each qualification has a size and a grade. UCAS's table turns that pair into a number of points, and the points from separate qualifications are added together to reach a total.

A total is not an entry requirement on its own. Many courses publish named grades instead, and a course that does use the Tariff sets its own points figure. Once the course starts, the mark that decides the degree comes from modules and credits rather than from points, which is what the degree classification calculator works out.

An AS in the same subject as your A level adds nothing

Where two qualifications follow on from each other or duplicate content, UCAS counts only the highest level held in that subject. An AS level in Maths beside an A level in the same subject is the case UCAS names itself.

The AS in the subject already held at A level is worth 16 points on the table and adds 0 to the total. A calculator that stacks it anyway returns 144, which is 16 points that no university will award. The same rule applies to a lower BTEC held alongside a higher one in the same subject, and to a Higher held alongside an Advanced Higher.

Spelling does not defeat it. An AS logged as Maths beside an A level logged as Mathematics is still one subject, and the calculator above reads them as one. An Extended Project Qualification is a different case: it is written about a subject rather than being a lower rung of it, so it adds on top of the A level in that subject and is worth 24 points at A in the table above.

UCAS Tariff tables for 2027 entry

A Tariff table is named for the year of entry and published each May, so the 2027 table is the one an applicant in the current cycle is working to. An A level A* is 56 points here. The scale below replaced an older one that scored the same grade in the hundreds, so points quoted from before the rebuild do not match.

A levels, AS levels and the EPQ

An A level runs 360 guided learning hours and an AS runs 180. A linked AS sat alongside the A level in the same subject is graded as one qualification and scores on its own table, as a grade pair.

BTEC Nationals

Pearson BTEC Level 3 Nationals, the current suite. The sizes are not interchangeable: the Extended Certificate is 360 guided learning hours, the same as one A level, and the Extended Diploma is 1,080, which is about three.

International Baccalaureate

The Tariff scores each Higher Level subject, each Standard Level subject, the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge separately, and adds them up. The Diploma's own overall score has no Tariff equivalent.

Access to HE Diploma

Points come from the Distinction, Merit and Pass credit profile across the 45 graded credits, not from one overall grade. All Distinction is 144 points and all Pass is 48. The rows here are examples; the calculator works out any profile.

What a UCAS points total does not decide

Universities are free to use the Tariff or ignore it. Some build every undergraduate offer on points, some make offers purely on named grades and never calculate a total, and some use points for one course and grades for the rest. Among those that do use points, some count only the best three A levels or Highers, so a fourth qualification adds nothing there even though it has a points value.

A university can also award fewer points than the table lists where it judges a qualification only partly relevant to the course, and not every qualification is on the Tariff at all. The course page is the figure that binds.
