University Degree Weightings

Each figure is a year's share of the classification, so a scheme published as a ratio and one published as percentages can be read against each other. The final year carries 50% of the class in the lightest scheme here and 100% in the heaviest.

Every regulation in the table was read on 20 September 2026, and each row's academic year is the one its regulation covers.

The classification bands themselves move far less than the weightings do, and the boundary zones under them are set out on the degree classification page.

3 of the 13 schemes count only part of a year. The credits that count are chosen on the mark, highest first, so the modules that drop out are the weakest ones.

A rule that names a level narrows what is eligible before the count runs, so a Level 5 module sitting in a final year is out however high its mark. Working from year averages cannot apply either rule, which is why the year average calculator takes modules and credits.

The University of Greenwich computes both of its schemes and awards the better outcome. The retired scheme runs only for a student registered continuously through the June 2023 change, which means a programme started in 2022 or earlier.

The University of Edinburgh classifies on the last 2 of 4 years, which are Junior and Senior Honours. One credit weighted mean across both Honours years, not a mean of the two year means. A Junior Honours year carrying fewer than 120 credits therefore counts for less than a full Senior Honours year, rather than for the flat half a year by year average would give it.

King's College London

Three year Honours degree, years weighted 0:2:3. Weighted 0 : 40 : 60 across the years.

• Chapter 5 states the award algorithm as 0:2:3 for three year Honours degrees, which is the 0:40:60 split in percentage terms.
• Reg 5.61 rounds the overall score to the nearest integer before the class is decided, so a score of 69.54 is a First and 67.52 sits in the boundary zone.
• Reg 5.80 weights each module by its credits and its year weight and divides once, which matters in a year where only 60 King's credits count, such as a semester abroad.
• KCL's Master's scheme, excluding Integrated Masters, runs Distinction from 70, Merit from 60 and Pass from 50.

University of Birmingham

Three year Bachelor's Honours degree, years weighted 0:25:75. Weighted 0 : 25 : 75 across the years.

• Four year programmes with a placement or a year abroad, and Integrated Masters, use a different split set out in Regulation 7 section 7.3.
• Birmingham ran a second, Covid era simplified profiling algorithm alongside the standard one from 2022/23 to 2024/25 and applied whichever gave the better result.

University of Leeds

Classification average across years 2 and 3, weighted 1:2. Weighted 0 : 33.3 : 66.7 across the years.

• Applies to students who started in 2022/23 or later.
• Integrated Masters run 1:2:2 across years 2, 3 and 4.
• The classification page states one calculation, the 1:2 weighting between programme years 2 and 3. It names no second weighting, so the calculator runs one.

University of Manchester

Three year Bachelor's, years weighted 0:33:67. Weighted 0 : 33 : 67 across the years.

• Manchester schools choose either 0:33:67 or 10:30:60. Check the programme handbook for which one applies.
• Referred passes are capped at the lowest compensatable mark of 30, not at 40. Deferral marks, where a first sit is delayed for certified mitigating circumstances, are not capped at all.
• Up to 40 credits of failed Level 6 work, or up to 60 with a one class penalty, can be specially compensated and folded into the average at the original uncapped mark.

Three year Bachelor's, years weighted 10:30:60. Weighted 10 : 30 : 60 across the years.

• The second of the two schemes Manchester schools choose between. The other is 0:33:67.
• Four year Integrated Masters run either 0:20:40:40 or 6:19:37.5:37.5 across years 1 to 4.

University College London

Honours Classification Scheme A, years weighted 1:3:5 on the best 90 credits in years 1 and 2. Weighted 11.1 : 33.3 : 55.6 across the years.

• Scheme B uses the same 1:3:5 weights on all 120 credits in every year. Scheme C weights year 1 at zero. Both are permitted, so check the programme.
• Integrated Masters extend the weights to 1:3:5:5, with the final two years weighted equally.
• The Final Weighted Mark must come from credit weighted Year Means. UCL rounds the weighted mean to 2 decimal places.

University of Greenwich

Level 6 best 90 of 120 credits, weighted 10:90. Weighted 0 : 10 : 90 across the years.

• The Student Centre article describes the 10:90 scheme, in effect from 6 June 2023, as the scheme that applies.
• Students registered continuously through the 2023/24 change were guaranteed whichever of the two algorithms gave the better outcome. Give a start year of 2022 or earlier to run both.

University of Edinburgh

Four year Scottish Honours degree classified on the two Honours years, weighted equally per credit. Weighted 0 : 0 : 50 : 50 across the years.

• Years 1 and 2 are pre-Honours. They have to be passed and they do not count toward the classification.
• Registry Services states the average is taken across all courses in years 3 and 4, weighted by credit, with every 10 credits carrying the same value. A Junior Honours year of 100 credits therefore counts for less than a 120 credit Senior Honours year.
• Schools set their own ratios. The School of Biological Sciences counts years 3 and 4 in a 1:2 ratio, which the custom preset covers.
• A student on an optional year abroad in year 3 is classified on Senior Honours alone.
• Five year Integrated Masters weight the final one or two years more heavily, with no fixed ratio published.

University of Cambridge

Overall Degree Classification by Tripos Part, Part IIA and Part IIB weighted 30:70. Weighted 0 : 30 : 70 across the years.

• Cambridge classifies by Tripos Part rather than by year. The Overall Degree Classification first appeared on transcripts for students matriculating from 2020.
• Faculty Boards can approve other splits. Law uses 50:50 and some Triposes classify on the final Part alone.

Law Tripos, Parts IB and II weighted 50:50. Weighted 0 : 50 : 50 across the years.

• The Faculty Board approved split for Law, in place of the 30:70 most Triposes use.

Final Part only, weighted 0:0:100. Weighted 0 : 0 : 100 across the years.

• Used by the Triposes that classify on the final Part alone. Management Studies is unweighted Part II only when it is taken in year 4.

University of Oxford

Finals supply the classification. The First Public Examination is pass or fail. Weighted 0 : 0 : 100 across the years.

• Prelims and Honour Moderations, the First Public Examination, carry no marks into the final class.
• Each Faculty Board sets its own Examination Conventions, and some use alpha, beta and gamma scales rather than marks out of 100. A percentage calculator cannot represent those.
• Honour Moderations, the classified form of the First Public Examination, applies to both Classics and Archaeology and Anthropology.

Unconfirmed: Honour Moderations feeds into the eventual award. The General Regulations treat the two Public Examinations as separate events and do not state that Moderations marks are combined into the final classification. That claim needs the subject level Examination Conventions before it is stated.

The University of Warwick leaves the split to each course, so it publishes no university wide ratio to list. Where a handbook gives a weighting the table above does not cover, the custom option on the degree classification calculator takes your own weights, your own number of years and your own best credits rule.
